Holy Spirit Highlighter by Kristie Washington

“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” — John 14:26 NIV

What do you do when you’re reading and come across something you want to remember? Most of the time, I either underline it in a red pen or use a highlighter, which I have in blue, pink, yellow, lime green, and orange. The point is, when I highlight something, it stands out, and I will remember it.

The Holy Spirit is our highlighter, just like John 14:26 says: “…and I will remind you of everything I have said to you.” When I pray, I ask the Holy Spirit to highlight areas in my life where I need correction, further instruction, confession, or simply a reminder of His past faithfulness.

I can ask the Holy Spirit to:

  • Highlight areas where I need to be transformed (Romans 12:2)
  • Show me what I need to confess (1 John 1:9)
  • Show me what I need to be taught (Psalm 86:11)
  • Encourage me by showing me where I have been faithful and obedient (Matthew 25:21)

As I ask these things, I picture the Holy Spirit taking all the different colors of His highlighter collection and painting a beautiful rainbow over my life. The blue transforms my heart and mind; the orange shows me how He advocates for me to the Father; the pink reminds me to be teachable; and the yellow reflects the sun (and the Son), the Light of the world (John 8:12).

My highlighters are a rainbow of colors that I can use to highlight God’s Word to me. Maybe it isn’t a coincidence that the Lord has “set a rainbow in the clouds” (Genesis 9:13), so I will be reminded of His promised covenant with His people. Holy Spirit, highlight my life with Your colors so that I will be reminded of Your promises to me.

Thank you, Lord, for giving us the Holy Spirit to be our Advocate and Counselor. Thank You for highlighting anything we ask so that we become more like our Father. We pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to highlight anything necessary, so we are reminded of who You are and that we may, in turn, highlight the glory of our Father. Amen!
