We all know Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” It is a beautiful description of how the Lord guides us through our lives. And what I love most about this is the realization that God is not going to show us everything at once. He shows us our next step, not all our steps.
I cannot speak on behalf of God, but I believe He does this out of protection for us. To show us everything at once would be too overwhelming, and it would also negate our need for faith. By showing us just what we need for that moment, He allows us to walk by faith and to walk safely, knowing He is guiding our path. As we learn to walk in the darkness with just enough illumination for our next step, our faith grows.
Some find the darkness around them frightening. Sometimes, when we focus on it more than the lamp at our feet, we become overwhelmed. I know I do. If I turn away from the light God has provided for my next step, I become anxious, and soon the blackness around me feels too heavy to bear. That is when I know I need to focus on the light more than the darkness. But what does that look like?
It looks like a strong relationship with the Lord, praying often and maintaining a consistent quiet time. Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed or anxious, I step back and evaluate my time with Him. Have I been praying about this? Have I been staying in the Word? If the answer is no, I understand why I feel untethered. I have taken my focus off the light.
We cannot face today’s problems with yesterday’s Word. Spending time in Scripture and prayer allows the Holy Spirit to use the living Word of God to minister to what we are facing today. It is our lamp, lighting our path, so that we can move forward with confidence.
Do not let the darkness overwhelm you. Let God fight it for you. All you have to do is remain focused on Him.
